With a length of 16 km and a width of 4 km, Schiermonnikoog is the smallest inhabited Wadden island. The only village on the island is also called Schiermonnikoog. Due to its varied landscape of dunes, woods, mudflats and polders, as well as diverse flora and fauna, the island has been designated as a National Park.

There is plenty to do on the Wadden island Schiermonnikoog:

  • Beach: Schiermonnikoog boasts the widest beach in Europe,
  • Cycling: enjoy the 30 kilometers of bicycle paths,
  • Round trips: explore the nature areas the Rif and Engelsmanplaat,
  • Duck sanctuary and lake Westerplas: Schiermonnikoog attracts many bird species.

Around 300,000 people visit the island every year. Especially the Kallemooifeest, a traditional festival in Whitsun weekend, and Klozum, a traditional costume festival in December are well attended. The island culinary specialties are Schiermonnikoog honey and farm cheese.
